Hundreds Queue for Designer Student Accommodation
Why students got out of bed at 5am - reported by The Gazette
Hundreds of students have put pen to paper to bag a room in a luxury new apartment complex in Stockton.
In less than three weeks of taking bookings, the 12-storey Mezzino student apartment block, next to Victoria Bridge, is nearly two-thirds full - and it's not even finished.
Property investors Bournston owns a number of Mezzino student buildings around the country, but has never seen one fill up so quickly. Named the Rialto, the £10m development by Mandale Properties and being taken over by Bournston, will be finished ready for the September term.
The 74 fully-furnished flats will offer 382 students affordable, contemporary living with broadband, widescreen TVs, Sky Sports and even, just announced, a solarium! As reported, students braved biting winds to start queuing at 5.30am on the day bookings opened last month.
Senga Hill, sales and marketing manager for Bournston, is amazed by the interest. "We have never had this kind of rush this early," she said. "As of yesterday morning, we had 199 confirmed bookings with 35 more friends of those yet to come and sort the paperwork out. Not every student even knows where they are going yet. I think it shows where the student market is starting to move. There's a case for students wanting the city living side but also having their own community where they can shut the door and be with their friends."
Senga urged students interested in the apartments, which cost £79.95 a week inclusive of utilities and contents insurance, to get in touch quickly. "The earlier you come, the more choice for location and size of apartments," she said.
