Out and about
Sheffield was voted the "World's Cleanest Industrial City." The city boasts a glaciated, green countryside that includes the popular Peak District National Park, and the new 350-acre. As the fourth largest city in Britain, its major industry continues to be steel production, and in particular cutlery. To appreciate the history of this "European Steel Capital," visit the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet museum. Alternatively, why don’t you nip across the road and treat yourself to some famous sweets from Granelli’s, an old fashioned sweet shop.
Chillaxing
The city offers lots of things to do around your studies from a walk in the park, going to see a live band to treating yourself to a meal in some fantastic restaurants.
Music
Sheffield has a great music scene and is responsible for some of the most exciting bands around at the moment. The Arctic Monkeys and Reverand & The Makers played their first gigs in some of the city’s music venues and Sheffield has good choice of music venues such as Don Valley stadium, The Leadmill, The PLug, Hallam FM Arena and the Sheffield City Hall. Sheffield has a great musical heritage too. Among the musicians to hail from Sheffield are Joe Cocker, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Def Leppard, Heaven 17, Human League and Moloko.
Sports
The “Steel City” has also become something of a sports hub as well, thanks to the Steelers (hockey) and Sharks (basketball). The first football rule book was written in Sheffield, and its football club is the world's oldest.
Fancy a bit of ski-ing? Check out the slopes! The Sheffield Ski Village is Europe's largest outdoor artificial ski site and a short train ride will get you to a fanstastic mix of slopes and shopping and Xscape, Castleford.
If you fancy being a spectator watch sports at some of the city's world class facilities, from athletics at Don Valley, to ice hockey at Ice Sheffield, swimming at Ponds Forge, or World Championship snooker at the Crucible
Shopping & Outdoors
A short Supertram ride from the centre is Meadowhall, one of Europe's biggest shopping malls with more than 270 stores. The City Centre complements Meadowhall perfectly, with its high-street stores and independent designer shops. If you are after something specialist or quirky try shopping on Eccleshill Road or Divison Street and then relax in the near by Botanical gardens or cool off by running through the fountain in the Peace Gardens.
Getting around
The Pinnacles is ideally located for both Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam Universities and has exceptional transport links- with adjacent tram stations and nearby rail and bus connections.
The Supertrams run to Meadow hall and Crystal Peaks shopping centres, as well as Hillsborough and out into the Sheffield countryside.
For just £9.50 you get 1 week’s unlimited travel on any stage coach tram or bus in Sheffield. A great way to get around the city.
Living at The Pinnacles you’ll find most places are within easy walking distance. However, trams and buses are a popular and cheap way to travel around the city. There is a tram stop for the University, points throughout the city centre and out to Meadowhall so it's incredibly easy to get to them from The Pinnacles.
For those of you that fancy a trip more further afield, then The Pinnacles is located within walking distance of the train station, which links to all major destinations like Manchester and London.
THE PINNACLES LOCAL AREA
The Pinnacles accommodation team work very closely with the local community, the council and South Yorkshire Police. With this in mind, here is some information about events that are currently taking place in the local area.
The Park Hill area is currently part of an exciting regeneration scheme, where the flats that provide a striking backdrop to the city centre are being renovated.
Urban Splash who will be developing the scheme have proposed for: A brand new doctor’s surgery and nursery facilities, Retail and leisure facilities, High quality public and private spaces. The cost of the scheme is set to exceed a staggering £146m.
The area that the flats are in has a minimal level of reported crimes. The nearby Park hill flats are now virtually empty, with about 100 occupied flats. These residents are to move out soon. The flats are under renovation and will be mostly private when the work is completed.
The flats nearby are predominantly privately owned and there are no crime related issues there.
Within the flats is a complex where the South Yorkshire Police team are soon to be based, so operational SNT officers will be within 200m of the Pinnacles.
As with any major City there is car crime, but this is not particularly prevalent in this area.
If you fancy yourself as a bit of a party animal then our location is ideal, situated no more then a 5 minute walk is the brand new Carling Academy, which has live bands such as The Kooks and The Automatic and club nights such as Hed Kandi and Transmission.
The heart of the student party scene has to be both West St and Division St and these are only a 10 minute walk from the complex .
As you are within touching distance of the city centre all local amenities, Restaurants, Bars and High Street shops are a 5 minute walk as are all transport links such as the train, bus and tram stations.
Art and culture has played a big part in Sheffield’s regeneration and this is evident as soon as you set foot into the city. There is numerous theatres, galleries and modern art located around the city such as the brand new digital campus site which is to be located opposite the train station and is to be at the forefront of modern architecture.
